April 2021 Update
The Club board members met on April 13. At the meeting it was decided not to open the club up to any road bike activities at this time. The reason for this is too much responsibility would be falling onto ride leaders faced with the difficult task of keeping all riders safe and enforcing the protocols that the OCA is requiring, such as ride contact tracing, social distancing and bike sanitizating for curb side repairs (flat tires) should the member requiring service need assistance. If the province, specifically Springwater County, moves to the 'Green' zone, then the board will decide how and when the Club would reopen, given there is adequate outdoor cycling season left for 2021. COVID-19 safety measures/protocols, developed by the Club, will be added to our 'Policies' and will be crafted to follow the latest Return to Sport and Progressive Return to Cycling Guidelines of the Ontario Cycling Association.
A Survey Monkey will be issued to enquire if there is adequate interest in putting together a Time Trial process and schedule that would meet both Provincial and OCA Covid guidelines. Look for this in the near future. We look forward to you comments. The Club intends to follow the system that Keith Richards suggested, with the handy cap for gender and age of cyclist, taken into consideration.
Zwift Ride Process
You need to have signed up for both Zwift and Zwift Companion.
In order to make sure you are invited to the rides, you need to follow both Davide Frattini and Nigel Dewsbury, since they will be the ones to invite you to the ride on Companion. The day of the ride, open Zwift and Companion apps.
On the Companion app, just before the ride commences, you will be invited to ride with that nights group. Just click on 'Accept'.
In order to chat with the others in the ride, open the site in Discord, Barrie Cycling Club (discord.com)
November 2020 Update
As our ad hoc cycling season comes to an end, we hope you were able to find some opportunity and time to put some miles (kilometers) on your bikes. We did enjoy a warm summer, which has just finished off with some of the warmest weather, ever, for this past week in November.
We are hoping that we will be able to help you continue with some cycling as we progress through the Fall months and head into the long nights of winter. With the initiative of Davide, we are going to be offering Zwift rides on Tuesday evenings at 6:30. These rides will be restricted to BCC riders, and will be by invitation. You simply have to log onto both the Zwift cycling and companion apps. The following link, https://zwift.com/news/19189-zwift-how-to-ride-with-friends?__znl=en-ca, gives an explanation on how the member 'Meet Up' rides work. Davide has also created a spread sheet that shows all the Tuesday rides, right through until April. You can get to that sheet by following this link, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v4peZWavS1sxYqQHU8tby3PtwgG_0nFEVgh4XNB2_lU/edit#gid=0. Within the spread sheet you will find the link to the Discord app voice chat, so we can talk (using your headphones) while riding.
At the moment, Nigel Dewsbury and Davide are leading the Zwift rides. In order to receive an invitation you need to follow Nigel or Davide on Zwift. (Davide Frattini and Dewsbury M3M).
We look forward to seeing you on Zwift, and that these rides are fun and will motivate you to stay active on your bicycles.
August 2020 Important Update
The difficult decision has been made to cancel the 2020 BCC cycling season. The board met, via Zoom, on July 30th. They reviewed the direction presented by the OCA, by the regional health department, and ad hoc discussions that had taken place with some members, to come up with this decision. OCA would not officially say that we would be covered by the insurance and efforts to get a written document from the regional health department was proving difficult and was taking too much time. OCA wanted this from us, to present to their lawyers and insurance, to see if we could get the green light. With the season more than half over, the decision was made.
OCA and Club membership refund OCA has created a form for members that had signed up for the 2020 season, to be reimbursed a portion of their fees. Some monies are being retained by OCA to help with their admin costs that they incurred, keeping staff and facility running throughout the mandatory lock-down. Use the hyper link to get you to the form, should you choose to ask OCA for a reimbursement. Information is also available on the OCA site, should you want to see more details.
This year 35 members signed up, officially with the club. We are working with CCN to create a special 2021 registration for these members, so they only have to pay OCA fees for next year. CCN will be given a list of the 35 members, and will monitor the request for pre-paid membership.
We are considering adding a page to our site that lists members that can offer cycling related services to both our members and to the community at large. We recognize that many of our members run small businesses, and with pandemic shutdowns, revenue streams all but dried up. We are hoping that this word of mouth type of advertising, by making other members in the club aware of the talents that the club membership contains, can help our entrepreneur members.
Zwift Rides We are looking into for the Fall, Winter and Spring seasons, to create a Zwift group(s) so that members can participate in TT’s, group rides and races. We hope to have more information regarding this in the weeks to come.
The board thanks you for your patience and understanding, during this difficult time. We hope that all of you, your families and friends have been able to stay safe and healthy, and will continue to, so we can get this pandemic behind us, and we move forward with our new normal.
